Oikopolis is an educational adventure game dealing with the issues of pollution, usage and management of water, destined for children aged 6 and up. The game deals with complex issues like subterranean waters, waste management, citizens' habits as well as local actions.
The user takes on the role of a small child that discovers that the waters around his village are polluted. He begins his journey, aiming to understand what is at fault. During the game, the hero explores the urban and natural environment, discovering several of the causes of pollution as well as possible solutions.
The player is encouraged to explore different strategies of dealing with the issues, via the local assembly that can take concrete measures. Each solution has advantages and disadvantages, and thus each player has to reason and reach their own conclusions. Based on constructivist educational principles, Oikopolis inspires the player to use critical thought in order to understand the complex issues of ecological balance.
